The Horse
“Get out of the way woman.”
“You will not kill my horse.”
“We need the meat. People are hungry.”
“You kill this horse over my dead body.”
“Don’t you understand? We can’t afford luxuries any longer.”
“Fools. This horse is no luxury. It is useful for transport, it pulls a plow, pulls loads, helps bring in the harvest. It pulls logs from the forest, game from the hunt… it makes life easier and only asks for decent treatment and a bit of friendliness in return. How many people do you know who are that low maintenance?”
“I’ll have to think this through.”
“Next time you come here with your gun, I’ll shoot you on sight. Don’t forget that.
“We’ll see about that.”

When the woman fell asleep that night, her lover with the long golden hair appeared again.
“Thank you,” was all he said before taking her in his arms.
