The Quest

“Since you failed so miserably at your other tasks, you’ll have one last chance to win the heart of the princess and the kingdom. Walk down that lane there,” the mage says.

I nod. How hard can it be? I take a few steps. There, easy-peasy. I puff up my chest.

*Wham!* A branch hits me full in the stomach. “Killing dragons, were you?”

“No!” I scream. “I was sorry for the beast…”

*Wham!* A branch hits my back this time. “Burning down the dark forest, did you?”

“I’m not burning down a whole forest, I’d rather stay poor!”

“Loser!” A branch hits my legs. “Can’t even climb the ice mountain.”

“It’s melting!”

I limp on. The sun rises and paints the castle in a golden light. The princess awaits me… and slaps me in the face.

“Wake up, lazy bum. Milk the cows already. Sheesh, young folks these days…”
